Humphree promises up to 95% reduction in roll with integrated stabilisation system

Swedish specialist Humphree is launching a stabilisation system that combines three technologies on a single platform. The integrated solution can reduce roll by up to 95%, depending on the type of vessel and sailing conditions.

Humphree is looking to take stabilisation for yachts and commercial vessels to a new level. The Swedish company has brought together a gyroscope, stabilising fins and interceptors in a single integrated system, managed by a central control unit. This unit continuously monitors the vessel’s movements and coordinates the different components to improve comfort on board.

The aim is to improve control of roll, pitch and yaw by the combined effect of the three technologies. The gyroscope, spinning at several thousand revolutions per minute, generates a force that counteracts the motion caused by waves. The system is designed to anticipate these movements and reduce their amplitude.

“Until now, stabilisation technologies have generally been used separately. We decided to bring them together in a single system, allowing us to tailor stabilisation to each vessel and its sailing conditions. The aim is not to replace one technology with another, but to make them work together,” explains Björn Säljö, CEO of Humphree.

A gyroscope to complete the system

The new gyroscope, designated HIG5, is the first in a range designed for vessels of different sizes. It complements Humphree’s existing fin stabilisation technology. According to the manufacturer, combining these technologies allows stabilisation performance to be tailored to the vessel’s type, operating profile and sea conditions.

The integrated approach is also intended to simplify maintenance. Humphree supplies and supports the entire system, giving shipbuilders a single point of contact for integration and technical support. The company also offers remote assistance for diagnosing problems, configuring equipment and supporting sea trials.
