Twin Disc cuts fuel consumption by up to 7% with new thrusters

Veth Propulsion, a subsidiary of Twin Disc, is unveiling Streamline-CRP, a next-generation azimuth thruster designed for cruise ships and ferries. The system promises up to 7% in fuel savings.

Lower fuel consumption, reduced noise, and greater onboard comfort: Veth Propulsion aims to optimise ship propulsion with Streamline-CRP, a contra-rotating azimuth thruster. This new technology enhances the operation of the contra-rotating propellers, which spin in opposite directions to maximise thrust and manoeuvrability while limiting energy losses.

The innovation relies on a number of mechanical and hydro-dynamic enhancements. A redesigned gearbox incorporating combined push-pull technology streamlines water flow and cuts resistance. The long, tapered tail section limits drag, while optimised propeller hubs help reduce energy losses.

Noise and vibration reduction

According to the manufacturer, these improvements cut fuel consumption by up to 7% under real-world conditions. The system is also engineered to limit noise and vibration to enhance onboard comfort. It is designed to maintain performance even in shallow waters.

“Streamline-CRP combines the proven technology of contra-rotating propellers—ensuring precise vessel control and optimal thrust in all directions—with reduced fuel consumption, noise, and vibration for a smoother, more efficient operational experience,” declares Bastiaan van Zuijlekom, Managing Director of Veth Propulsion.

Available in L-Drive, Z-Drive, or compact integrated versions, Streamline-CRP can be adapted to various architectures, including military vessels. Multiple blade configurations allow performance to be tailored to each application’s requirements. The goal is to combine energy efficiency, manoeuvring precision and a reduced environmental footprint.
